History of Brigstone House

The house was originally built in 1794 by the Quakers, Joseph and Lucy Brown as two weavers’ cottages and was on the site of his grandmother's cottage. Brigstone House became Grade II listed in October 1988 due to its importance to the Quaker movement.

Joseph was known as the Martyr of Lothersdale - he was imprisoned in York Gaol along with seven other Quakers because he defied the vicar of Carleton and refused to pay his tithes. Even in those days, this caused a national scandal and the men were released early!

The current owners, Amanda and Alex Hawkes, purchased the property in July 2019. It having been unoccupied for approximately 18 months, they set about the considerable task of modernising this charming landmark dwelling.

Having no gas or oil supply, the current owners’ desire is to make the whole house self-sufficient, though this is a long term and somewhat costly project. The water supply to the property comes directly from the moors above, via a spring and after filtering and U.V treatment, is wonderfully natural.
